As a recipient of TEN’s newsletters, I thought this initiative was important to share. If you are a voter in Oklahoma- take action! If you’re not old enough to vote yet- urge those that are to take action.

The following is from The Equality Network….

As Speaker of the Oklahoma House of Representatives, Kris Steele (R-District 26) wields a great deal of power. He appoints committees and controls floor debates. This means that Speaker Steele can help us stop Mike Reynolds’s attempts to derail LGBT equality in Oklahoma.

Mike Reynolds (R-District 91) has introduced two bills that should terrify anyone who cares about civil rights and fairness:

*Bars municipalities from enacting nondiscrimination ordinances granting municipal employees nondiscrimination protections that exceed those given to state employees. LGBT state employees are NOT protected from employment discrimination.

*Nullifies any existing and bars any future municipal nondiscrimination order, regulation, or ordinance granting municipal employees nondiscrimination protections that exceed those given to state employees. Passage of this bill would strike down LGB-inclusive nondiscrimination policies protecting public employees in Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Miami, McAlester, Del City, Vinita, Altus, and Vinita. It would prevent Norman from adopting an LGBT-inclusive nondiscrimination public personnel policy that has been under consideration for months.

TEN OPPOSES this bill

Reinstitutes the ban on gays and lesbians serving in Oklahoma National Guard. This bill is even more extreme than the now-extinct Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy because it does not prohibit commanders from inquiring about a soldier’s sexual orientation.

TEN OPPOSES this bill

Please contact Kris Steele today and tell him to stop HB 2245 and HB 2195, urge him NOT to have committees hear these bills. You can call Speaker Steele at 405.557.7345 or email [email protected] For a sample letter and direct email link to Speaker Steele, go to
